I have chosen the movie “Powers of Ten” to share on my blog today because I found it very interesting and informative. I guess the normal routines of our lives make us forget all that surrounds us and what does not meet the eye. The video starts out at a picnic and goes back in space ten times at a time until it reaches the outer boundaries of our galaxy. The video goes back to the picnic then magnifies on the hand of a human all the way to the smallest protons of a carbon. The movie structure and composition is very well centered to explain well the information being presented to the viewer. The images are real life photos describing the nature of spaces. There are symbolic forms throughout the movie of numbers and measurements. The use of time was very well spaced to make the information understood but at the same time not too slow so the viewer does not get bored. There is a narrator in the movie with very light music in the background. The intentions and meaning of the video again are to inform the viewer from a scientific point of view the power of spaces in our everyday lives.

People to Know

Choosing a motion graphics artist was a very hard task. All the artists presented different ideas and totally different schemes of execution. I came down to the choice of one of the two: either Smith & Foulkes, or Charles and Ray Eames.

Adam Foulkes and Alan Smith are two artists from London with many awards. They teamed up with with Nexus studios in 1997. Smith & Foulkes had very good advertising videos which included advertisements for Honda and Coca - Cola. They had a clean and modern look to all their work.  Some of my favorite work for them is “Honda Jazz: ‘This Unpredictable Life’”, “Video Game: Coca Cola”, and “Grrr.” The two designers work may best be described as being from the collage genre.

Charles Eames (June 1907 - August 1978) and Ray Eames (December 1910 - August 1988)  are American Designers which made major attributes to modern architecture and furniture, they also worked in the fields of graphic design, fine art and film. After watching their video of “Powers of Ten” I understood why these designers stood out amongst the rest. The video was informative, interesting, and original. The brothers work would most probably fall under the organic genre.

This movie became one of my favorite motion graphics pieces. “Vanishing Point” is a perfect example of abstract art (my favorite form of art). My critique for this movie is positive. The screen space is well balanced and used very rationally. The images are random colored shapes and 3-D forms. The shapes and forms being used are mainly circles and spheres, triangles and cones, and squares and cubes. These forms go through smooth transition which makes it hard to tell exactly what is being shown (this is most probably the intent of the artist which made the video). The music is also very smooth and mildly paced which synchronized perfectly with the video. This movie was very entertaining, and inspirational. Vanishing Point best fits the fluid genre.

This piece represents good type because despite its very minimalist look it has survived through many ages. I liked the type because it is very playful and illustrative and as the author of the article describes it contains “a sense of whimsicality.”

This article is providing inspirations for typographers at every level. The authors give some points to consider to build typographic control. The right type can play a large role in any design. The right scaling and clarity are things to be aware of. A strong typographical statement can be more meaningful than a photo or illustration. The most important thing I learned here is that a designer should try to be as creative, different, and original as possible because text does have several voices.

This video made me smile so I decided to share it. The size of the objects are ironic and create a comedic sense. The texture and pattern of the video overall were very simple, as well as the symbols, colors and shapes. I noticed that the use of very primary elements in art give a light feel and usually are easy on the viewer giving a comical aspect. In the video the lonely cloud goes to the beach and not only finds trouble, but finds you can never please everyone.

Even though this piece was very short I found it intriguing. It started out with a very fantasy magical world with pink unicorns and pleasant music, then suddenly jolted into a haunted house theme in an amusement park with heavy metal and wizards. The way they used the contrast of the two themes created an element of surprise. The color palette worked together perfectly and the music emphasized what the video is all about, a music video company.

Relaxing. Inspiring.
